Trance is a state of consciousness with an internal focus of attention.

Trance is a type of state known as "downtime" in NLP.

  • Downtime is when you are predominantly paying attention to the internal world.
  • Uptime is when you are predominantly paying attention to the external world.

Trance indicators:

  • Muscle relaxation
  • Deeper voice quality
  • Relaxed facial muscles
  • Slower pulse and breathing
  • Changed eye accessing
  • Lost or slowed reflexes
  • A subjective feeling of comfort
  • The brain neurotransmitter acetylcholine dominates rather than norepinephrine
  • An EEG will show dominant theta waves.
  • The following may also occur:
    Amnesia
    Anaesthesia
    Hallucination
    Catalepsy
    Regression
    Time distortion
  • Everyday trance:
    Inward focus
    Meditating
    Relaxing
    Fantasizing
    Planning
    Worry
    Mental "fugues"
    Hurt or shock
